The idea of a Sopranos movie is thrilling enough for fans, but the level of excitement reached epic proportions when it was announced that the late James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, is playing the part of a young Tony in the prequel.

The movie, titled The Many Saints of Newark, explores the complex dynamics between Italian Americans and African Americans in New Jersey in the 1960s. The film is set during the same time as the Garden State riots, which provides an interesting backdrop to explore Tony’s early days.

Hopefully he can act https://t.co/K9X67RSEfs

For fans who are concerned about continuing the story, Sopranos creator David Chase wrote the script for the film while Alan Taylor, who worked on Mad Men and Game of Thrones, is directing.

When fans first heard about Gandolfini’s son playing the lead, some expressed doubt about his ability to play such a complex character. But Michael didn’t get the role just because he carries his father’s name. According to Romper, Michael went through a grueling audition and was picked because Chase and Taylor felt like he was the best man for the job.

I wish him much good fortune. I saw him two weeks ago. He's a very fine fellow with a wonderful family. #MichaelGandolfini https://t.co/nvpjv4JfRb

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Michael shared.

Given the popularity of the series, fans had strong reactions to the casting news. Most fans were relieved to hear that Gandolfini’s son is involved in the project, though they clearly have high expectations for the film.

“It’s nice that his son’s playing him at least,” one fan wrote.

The Sopranos aired on HBO between 1999 and 2007. Rumors of a film have circulated for years, and the prequel announcement comes as the show just celebrated its 20th anniversary. Throughout its run, the show took home five Golden Globes and 21 Emmys — and is usually considered one of the best shows of all time.

This is either a great idea or a horrible idea. https://t.co/dPAWJZbZHb

James Gandolfini tragically passed away in 2013 at the young age of 51. With Michael clearly having a strong connection to his dad, we have little doubt that he’ll bring a lot of emotion to the role, just like his late father.
